Short Course in Internet Research





Brief Description:
This course investigates why one can't always find what one is looking for. More often than not, it is possible to find that elusive piece of information on the web, simply by understanding the way web-searching works. Some aspects of the theory of searching are covered, but essentially this is a practical, hands-on course where the different functionalities offered by web-searching tools are explored in detail.

Learning Outcomes:
After completion of this course, delegates will:
- understand the Internet: the web, groups, etc;
- have an overview of finding information on the web, including directories, search engines, meta-search engines and meta sites;
- understand the visible, opaque, private, proprietary and invisible web;
- understand Boolean (exact match) searching and browsing;
- understand search strategies and query construction;
- have obtained power search tips;
- be competent in speciality searching;
- be able to evaluate web databases;
- have studied search engine comparative statistics and politics;
- be knowledgeable about current awareness services and the selective dissemination of information on the web;
- understand text, image, sound and video retrieval on the web;
- be competent in news searching;
- be able to conduct scholarly research on the web; and
- understand competitive intelligence on the web.

The course covers the following topics:
1. The Internet: the web, groups, etc
2. An overview of finding information on the web: directories, search engines, meta-search engines and meta sites
3. The visible, opaque, private, proprietary and invisible web
4. Boolean (exact match) searching, best match searching, ranking and clustering
5. Searching vs. browsing
6. Search strategies and query construction
7. Power search tips
8. Speciality searching
9. Evaluating web databases
10. Search engine comparative statistics and politics
11. Current awareness services and selective dissemination of information on the web
12. Text, image, sound and video retrieval on the web
13. News searching
14. Scholarly research on the web
15. Competitive intelligence on the web
